Global Reforestation Initiative by AgroMicron

Gepost door admin op 03/02/2008

Thanks to specially acquired clone samples AgroMicron will now
be able to completely regenerate an entire forest in some
regions in seven to ten years. Which means the global
deforestation problem might no longer be a problem.

The name given to this project is the AgroMicron Paulownia
Project, which originated due to the fact that Paulownia tree is
one of the most resourced tree’s in Asia. The Paulownia tree is
one of China’s most important traditional trees and is widely
planted to supply village needs for wood it is also know as
Pouton on in China, Kiri in Japan and Golden Cedar in Australia.

Thanks to the quick growth rate and size of the Paulownia it
made the perfect donor for AgroMicron’s needs of 15 pristine
clones. The process of getting to these 15 was a long and
difficult one, which started with 840 clones and with the help
of the Chinese Academy of Forestry this was brought down to 32
and that was when the final cut was made.

Currently 14 of the clones are maintained in tissue for
multiplication and commercial supply while the last clone
AgroMicron wouldn’t say what they where testing with it, maybe
some super tree or maybe they are looking at how to get the 7
year growth cycle down to 4 or maybe even just 3 years which
would mean an very quick end to all the fears of deforestation
and the negative effectives this has on the environment.

So what is a company like AgroMicron spearheading such a project
with virtually no possibility of a commercial gain, well that
was the question I proposed to Mr. Gary Lloyd, Senior Corporate
Advisor to AgroMicron, his reply shocked me. He stated “while
AgroMicron is about making profits, its more focused on making
good, we know we can make money from anything we do or sell but
the hard part in business is actually benefiting others” he went
on to explain why the Global Reforestation Initiative was
important to AgroMicron “with all the projects and people we
come into contact with we saw that we could easily collaborate
these minds together and work collectively on one project that
would benefit everyone and the Global Reforestation Initiative
does just that.”

Now I’ve never seen a Paulownia tree, but by the sounds of
things we’ll be seeing a lot more of them and hopefully in the
not to distant future. For the time being AgroMicon will
continue to research and work with their clones and you can bet
on a follow up story in the coming months. In the mean time to

The Top 10 Benefits of Spiritual Environmental Design

Gepost door admin op 21/01/2008
Toegevoegd onder: School of Science

What would your life be like if you were surrounded by “feel good” people, places, and things so that your spirit really gets the chance to soar? This top ten, taken from CoachVille’s Personal Environments Community at http://cid384.cvcommunity.com/?tabInx=webpage , explores the benefits of using the art of environmental design in the realm of spirituality.

1. Assess and Create Sacred Space

We all have spaces that we declare as being sacred…those places and in our homes, hearts, offices, communities, network, in families, and in nature that we can call our own and that represent that which is spiritual in our lives. Whether it is a grand cathedral, an intimate corner in a shared room or a park bench by the water, sacred spaces are a vital part of our expression of our inner selves. The things we surround ourselves with are a direct reflection of our inner spiritual being. What do your surroundings reflect about your level of spirituality?

2. Increase the Energy Vibrations of Your Surroundings

The energy of your surroundings, known as “chi” can be free flowing (high energy) or it can be stagnant (low energy). Nothing affects the chi energy of your spaces more than clutter or unfinished business. “Chi” is similar to the blood of the body. If the blood of the body becomes clotted or “cluttered,” major health complications can occur (heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure.) Imagine that the piles of clutter, books, and “stuff” in your attic are clogging the arteries or the flow of your home. Is it time to raise the energy vibrations where you live and work?

3. Work Effectively With Color

Our reactions to colors are led by a combination of biological, physiological, psychological, social and cultural factors, and yes…color has an affect on the way we operate and our ability to connect to our spiritual being. Certain color effects seem more universal, such as that of “warm” and “cool” colors. Warm colors include magenta, red, orange, yellow, and yellow-green. They speed up our perception of time and produce feelings that are warm and cozy. These colors are associated with excitement, happiness, boldness, and comfort. Cool Colors generally include violet, blue, light blue, cyan and sea green. Emotions associated with these colors include peacefulness and can also represent sadness, withdrawal and repression. Are the colors you wear and have around you working for you or against you?

4. Resonate with Harmony and Joy

When vibration is timed to be in synchronism and it is noted that less and less energy is required to then excite the system, resonance is said to occur. Pure resonance occurring in a system will allow a system when started vibrating to continue indefinitely. Resonance is a basic principle that affects everyone and everything. This same principle applies for a person in need of physical healing, and/or mental and emotional transformation. The correct frequency reminds the body’s energy field of its original design, and brings it into harmony. When we are in the presence of a person who is expressing joy, the energy field of their joy brings our own joy to the surface, so we resonate together. There will be certain people, sounds, ways of being, music, foods, and objects that create resonance in your environment. Who or what are these? Find ways to include more of them as a way to enhance your spiritual well being.

5. Eliminate Emotional and Spiritual Blind Spots

Emotional and spiritual blind spots can create energy which is draining. For example: You are judging someone for their religious beliefs, which is actually a judgment against yourself (maybe you are struggling with what you believe.) Your cultural background tells you that a certain “belief is wrong,” so you project your feelings about belief systems onto others. Education and a great deal of understanding of others can go a long way with overcoming emotional and spiritual blind spots. What are some of your blind spots and how might they be robbing you of energy, spirituality and joy?

6. Reconnect with Your Intuition — Your Deeper Self

For centuries, many cultures have focused a tremendous amount of effort in the direction of developing the mind. We don’t all grow up learning how to trust our gut or look closely at our dreams and instincts. Instead, we are taught to grow our minds, and to ignore our deeper selves. Our intuition can create tremendous energy, and can guide us to a place which is healing in all areas of life…the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well being. What are you pretending not to “know”?

7. Uncover and Dissolve Your Tolerations

Some of the most common tolerations in the Spiritual Environment include: My own judgment of myself and others; low spiritual energy…frustration, anger, doubt, fear; I don’t know what I believe or where I get my energy…I sometimes wonder if there is a higher power; overwhelm and the inability to tap the intuition; and I feel disconnected and alone. What do you often tolerate in your spiritual environment that keeps you from enjoying peace and a sense of spiritual fulfillment?

8. Be Source

By enjoying a spiritually supportive environment, you come to see yourself as a positive source of energy and trust in your ability to create positive energy sources. You begin to understand that you are responsible for what you manifest, be it joy or sorrow, and you chose wisely. Are you conscious of the energy you take with you when you walk into a room?

9. Convert Feelings of Conflict Into Love and Contentment

Do you want to feel “unplugged, out of sorts, in conflict, and tense,” or do you want to feel “love, joy, harmony, and a feeling of peace?” In the world of the five senses, we often find ourselves in conflicting situations, because we have strongly held opinions and beliefs about what is right and what is wrong. “She is cheap, or he is stupid, or they are arrogant, or she is a dizzy blond” are not who they really are - they are your judgments. As Wayne Dyer says ” When you judge another person you do not define them. You merely define yourself as someone who needs to judge.” It will be difficult to bring spiritual stability and harmony into your life as long as you accept the notion that one way is right and one way is wrong. By bringing an open and non-judgmental soundness to your interactions with yourself, your relationships, and to each life process, your own spiritual energy will be raised.

10. Achieve Authentic Empowerment

Many people find their connection to the world through the five senses. This is a connection to the external forces of the world, and relying on these fives senses alone can create an amazing amount of fear. Many people believe that someone who is spiritually evolved has moved beyond the five senses and is able to fully see the dynamics and currents which cause anger, hate, and frustration, and those which create love, happiness, and a feeling of contentment. Spiritual experts agree that our souls are designed to thrive in spaces filled with love, creativity, abundance, happiness, and a feeling of peace. When the ego begins to serve the soul completely, authentic empowerment is achieved.

EZ Trees to Plant

Gepost door admin op 06/10/2007
Toegevoegd onder: School of Science

Whenever someone asks me for suggestions on EZ to plant trees
and shrubs, I always begin with Arborvitae.

Arborvitae are commonly used evergreen shrubs or trees useful in
urban areas where low maintenance and durability is needed. Many
cultivars with forms such as being globed in shape, columnar, or
narrow pyramidal, tend to be near buildings, doors, and
walkways. Other forms which are larger are used for screens and
buffers that are planted in rows. The form of arborvitae is
small, medium, or large depending on the cultivar. Some reach
50′, others only 3′. Most prefer full sun to partial sun.
Planting in dense shade conditions should be avoided. A moist ,
well drained, loamy soil in full sunlight are ideal conditions
for growing healthy arborvitae. These plants will tolerate
rocky, clay, urban conditions of heat drought and pollution. The
most important pest we have is bagworms which must be controlled
to prevent complete defoliation. Some cultivars have multiple
leaders which also prove to be a detraction for the plant.
Pruning out multiple leaders in some cultivars is a simple
remeady. Our most popular Arborvitae is the Emerald Green
arborvitae. Many people prefer to spell them Arbor Vitae . It is
a bright light green color and narrow in shape. It makes a
distinctive and impressive natural fence. It is easy to grow
,plant, and keep in shape.

The Hetz Midget arborvitae is a dwarf globe variety. This is a
good choice for along walkways and gardens. This is a tough
plant that is easy to install and not going to cost a lot. It
will maintain its color in the winter and will withstand snow
loads well. We carry these plants in 2 and 3 gal. pots. The
prices on these dwarfs vary from $15 to $30 depending on size
and quanity ordered.

Another small arborvitae that we grow in pots is the Rheingold
arborvitae. This is a small globe shaped plant that has a golden
green cast to it in the summer and a bronze winter color. We
also have the American Arborvita known as “Tiny Tim”.This
arborvita grows in zone 2 - 7. Its is a needled evergreen in the
Cupressaceae Family. It will grow in height from a half a foot
to 1 foot tall. Its spread will be about 1 to 1.5 feet. This is
a plant that requires little work. Selecting quality arborvitae
for the home landscape : When you get to the nursery or garden
center where you will buy your arborvitae, pick out the
healthiest, most robust plants that have no evidence of disease
or insect damage. The potting medium should be moist, but not
wet, and the roots should well dispersed in the medium.
Arborvitae that have roots growing from the drainage holes or
circling the top of the pot are less desirable. Many people
choose to buy arbs from a mail order company, which is perfectly
acceptable. However, realize that most woody plants purchased
from mail order catalogs will be shipped dormant and bare root,
that is, without any soil attached to the root system. Such
plants may be smaller in size because of the expense of
shipping. It is important to plant such material immediately
upon arrival. Generally it is best to purchase one-year-old
material from mail order companies since this material is more
vigorous and will transplant better. The larger material that is
offered is often composed of the less vigorous plants held over
from previous years. Most large sized arbs are balled and
burlaped. Don’t buy any arbs bare rooted over 3′ tall. Any plant
larger should be balled and burlaped.

We have thousands of arbs and always have hundreds ready for you
to pickup. From 2′ to 15′ we have inventory balled and burlaped.
Don’t worry about driving long distances to get to us. We are
easy to get to near Phila., on a major road, Rt. 313 in
Fountainville Pa.. We want to move our stock and will make sure
that you go home a happy camper. If you are coming from a long
distance, we will give away free inventory that is surplus to
our needs. One of our fields is being converted into ball and
soccer fields and work will begin Nov. 25 2005. Stock in this
field will go cheap. We will stay open til the last dog dies or
we sell out. I think we have more stock than what we possibly
can sell. You can see our web sites at:

Reuse in the Workshop

Reuse in the Workshop
(476 words)

The workshop is a great place for reusing items formally destined for the landfill. Even if you do not have a shop or craft area you can always donate the items mentioned in the following paragraphs to friends, schools, shops, youth centers… The concept of reusing is as limitless as your imagination.

Screws, bolts, picture hooks, plant hangers, curtain hooks, and hinges are common hardware items used in most homes. Although not overly costly when purchased a few pieces at a time, they can add up over the years. Salvage any reusable hardware and parts from old cabinets, furniture or mechanical items before discarding. These can easily be organized and stored in plastic containers of different sizes. Shop with this in mind and purchase items like peanut butter or mayonnaise in clear plastic containers. These are our favorite as they are recyclable, sturdy and you can easily determine the jar’s contents at a glance. When buying screws and bolts avoid the small plastic packages and try to find a store that sells these items out of bulk bins. You save money and packaging too.

Strong plastic jugs from juice, milk, or detergents make excellent storage containers for tools, rags or parts in the workshop. At a section near the top of the jug remove all but a flap of plastic to attach it to a wall or post. Any rough spots can be filed off or covered with tape. Drill a few holes in the bottom for drainage and use in the same way outside in the garden and for storing clothespins.

Any clothing or towels too ragged to donate to a thrift store still have value. Cut the material into squares of different sizes to use as cleanup rags. Many garages, cabinet shops and backyard mechanics will gratefully accept excess rags. Sewing groups would gladly accept the buttons and zippers gleaned from the clothing. Children’s programs and daycare centers also use buttons for crafts.

Small household appliances that are no longer working can be salvaged for parts. If you are not familiar with this type of operation don’t attempt it - you can always donate them to handymen types that you may know, or appliance repair classes in your community. Handles from pots and pans can come in handy for fashioning custom tools, or they can be used to make a storage box easy to carry. Old utensils can be bent and made into various picks and scrapers.

The workshop can become a veritable stew pot of reuse ideas. As it is not a place commonly viewed by guests or neighbors it will not matter so much if the look is compromised by the reused items. Of course, the most important thing is the fact that you are reducing your landfill contribution by taking the matter into your own hands and making a difference!

Interviewing for Family History Writers - 4 Important Tips

Gepost door admin op 25/08/2007
Toegevoegd onder: School of Science

Interviewing is an important skill for the life storywriter, no matter what the size of your family memory project. You will want to do plenty of it as you build the research you need to write your family stories. How will you begin?

1. Establish Trust with Simple Questions

You want to establish trust and empathy with your interview subject, so small talk at the beginning of an interview is not necessarily a waste of time. You may want to ask a few simple questions, such as date and place of birth, and chat about those answers to put your subject at ease.

2. Follow Up with Open-Ended Questions

The important thing to remember with interviewing is to ask questions which are as open-ended as possible - questions which require much more than a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer, but which encourage the person to begin telling a story. For example, instead of asking “Where did you live when you were a teenager?” - try re-phrasing the question as “Take me on a walk around the house you lived in when you were fifteen.” You will find that you get an array of extra detail instead of a sparse response.

Once we have asked the simple questions, I move into questions like these:

What did your parents tell you about their lives?

Tell me what you remember about the place where you grew up?

Take me on an imaginary walk around your home when you were a child.

Describe your family gatherings.
Tell me about religious observances in your family.

Who was your biggest influence? Who did you admire and why?

Who made you laugh? Who made you feel important and why?

3. Listen Attentively

The aim is to get momentum going, to establish a natural rhythm in conversation. Once you’ve started the interview rolling, except for an occasional question to keep it rolling or steer it in the right direction, the most efficient thing you can do is listen attentively.

4. Add Unique Questions to Wrap Up

The very best questions are the ones you make up as you go along, which are specific to the individual you are interviewing. These will be determined by the person’s responses to those basic questions you ask. Make a note as you are interviewing and return to these at the earliest possible opportunity or ask them in a wrap-up interview.

Before you know it, interviewing will become second nature to you and you will have collected a treasure-trove of material for your unique family memory book!

Foliage

The air feels vastly colder, as I step outside this morn; the
colors of the leaves are bolder; Ah, autumn, again, is borne.

The scents of fresher air, waft gently into my face, the wind
flows through my hair, feeling oh so light as lace.

Trees which yesterday were green, today have colors galore. And
for the winter they seem to scream, for that season they abhor.

Oh, the vast array of hues! I stand in awe and admire;
everything but the blues, how the colors just get brighter.

The trees have shed their hues of heat, giving way to flames
with colors; views of fall foliage one cannot beat, to me, this
scene, there’s no other.

Yes, autumn is finally here! with its vast array of tones, so
let’s all shout out a hearty cheer, from the depths of our very
bones.

American Holly Trees Hollies are very diverse. Holly plants can
be successfully grown in all fifty states of the United States.
There are hundreds of species of holly trees and shrubs. Holly
plants come in all sizes, ranging from spreading dwarf holly
shrubs to tall holly trees. Their shapes vary from rounded to
pyramidal to columnar. There are many uses of hollies in the
landscape. Holly are attractive in foundation plantings or as
borders for garden areas. Holly trees and the taller holly
shrubs have long been used as privacy screen hedges to screen
out traffic or neighbors, or as accent plants on a lawn. In
Buckingham Township Pa., hollies tend to be eaten by deer. This
is a major problem. Some Varieties such as Dragon Lady have
sharp spines that repell deer.

Most hollies are evergreen, with deep green color making them
attractive in the landscape. On our nursery we usually have 20
plus varieties available. You can see our web site at

Using Water As a Power Source

Gepost door admin op 23/06/2007
Toegevoegd onder: School of Science

Water is used as a significant power source in many parts of the world. In fact, Norway uses it to produce 99 percent of its electricity. So, how does it work?

Water constantly moves through a vast global cycle. First, it evaporates from water sources such as lakes and oceans, forming clouds. The water is returned to the Earth in the form of precipitation such as rain or snow. This eventually flows through rivers until it reaches larger bodies of water such as monstrous lakes like Lake Baikal in Russia or oceans.

The sun powers this natural cycle through the evaporation process. In doing so, it also gives us a very clean energy resource that can be used to generate massive amounts of electricity. .

When flowing water is captured and turned into electricity, it is called hydroelectric power. While there are different types of hydroelectric power plants, all rely on the kinetic energy found in flowing water as a basis for generating electricity. In projects such as the Three Gorges Dam in China, the amount of electricity produced is simply stunning.

The exact process by generating electricity differs slightly in each situation, but is basically uniform in the fundamental workings. A site is located on a river where there is a significant volume of water and flow rate. A dam is then built on the river, which effectively seals off the water flow. When the dam is built, spillways are created within the structure, which allow the water to pass through the dam in a controlled manner.

Within the lower section of these spillways, large turbines are placed with their “paddle” fans in the path of the water. As the water rushes pass, the fans are turned and electricity is produced. The electricity is then either stored or sent out on lines for use in cities. For example, electricity produced from Hoover Damn on the Colorado River supplies electricity to Las Vegas and surrounding towns.

Generating electricity with water is a fairly common methodology. Since it doesn’t produce pollutants or waste, it is also a good one for our environment.
