The proper boating equipment can make the difference between a delightful boating experience and a disastrous one. While every state and province may have different regulations about what types of boating equipment are required, the fact of the matter is that some safety equipment should be carried whether it is legally required or not. This boating equipment is designed not only to keep the passengers safe, but the boat working properly as well. Here is a brief list:
1. Paperwork and Documentation: Do not head out on the river, lake, or the open sea without a proper boating license as required by law for any operator and also remember to carry your registration materials as well. Put this “boating equipment” all in a waterproof box or bag to keep them safe from water damage.
2. Flotation Devices: You may not like to wear those bulky “life vests” but there are many styles available which are lightweight and even self-inflating to make them less uncomfortable and easier to wear. Even if it is not required by law, it is recommended that everyone on the boat wears this piece of boating equipment. Some boats carry a life ring as well.
3. Lights: Navigational lights and distress signals are necessary boating equipment for everyone. You will be glad if you get caught out on the water at night unexpectedly.
4. Navigational Aids: Even if you know the area fairly well, it is a good idea to carry navigation charts and maps and a compass and even a GPS system if you want to spend the extra money.
5. Noise making tools: Take a horn, whistle or some other noise maker to use to warn other boats or water skiers of your approach.
6. Ventilation: This boating equipment is vital for houseboats because of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.
7. Fire Extinguishers: Every boat should have at least one fire extinguisher. You never know when an engine fire or other emergency will put your boat in danger-and help could be far away.
8. Anchor: This keeps the boat from drifting when you stop to fish, or if you stall out on the water.
9. Pumping Equipment: This gets rid of things like bilge water or human waste on the boat safely and cleanly.
10. Tool Box and Repair Manual: Make sure that you have tools and that you know how to use them for those quick on the water repairs.

Overnight Chartering
After a few day charters you might be ready for more
extensive cruising in The Bay. There are lots of harbors and
marinas where you take a boat to spend the night. Sailors
who enjoy camping out will like the economy of overnight
cruising in the smaller boats but the features of the larger
boats will make it more comfortable. Spinnaker offers a
special weekender rate for the period of Friday evening
through Sunday evening. The weekender cost is discounted
by 10% from the cost of chartering two weekend days. Friday
night is included at no extra charge. At other times, there’s a
10% discount for two or more consecutive days and a 20%
discount for 5 or more consecutive days.
Places to go include anchorages, private yacht clubs, public
marinas and parks. The best anchorage in the Bay is
Clipper Cove, also known as Treasure Island Cove or Yerba
Buena Island Cove. Clipper Cove is the name given when
the Pan Am Clipper flying boats were based there. This is
the coolest place to anchor during heat waves. Be sure to
enter at the northern end of the mouth of the cove to avoid
the shoal that extends from Yerba Buena Island at the
entrance of the cove. Inside the cove, there’s plenty of room
to swing at anchor adjacent to Treasure Island Marina. A
cool breeze blows right over the causeway that connects
Treasure Island to Yerba Island but the water is flat and very
well protected.
There are dozens of public marinas around the Bay. Some
are privately owned and some are municipal but almost all
accept boats for overnight stays. A few harbors belong to
private yacht clubs. These are only open to their members
and members of reciprocating private yacht clubs. The
California Boater’s Guide to the Harbors & Marinas of the
San Francisco Bay, Delta, Outer Coast & Hawaii is a good
guide to harbors with facility descriptions, maps, phone
numbers and other useful information. There’s a copy in the
Spinnaker office for reference.
Popular destinations include South Beach Harbor near Pac
Bell Park in San Francisco, Schoonmaker Point Marina in
Sausalito, and Bellena Isle Marina in Alameda. These and
many others have restaurants nearby and other fun things to
do.
There are also a few parks where boats are welcomeS
notably Angel Island State Park. This park has picnic areas,
nature areas and historical areas dating back beyond the
civil war. There are slips available in Ayala Cove, first come,
first served during the daytime. These slips must be vacated
at sunset. There are mooring buoys in the cove where boats
can stay overnight. There is a use fee for the slips and
mooring buoys. Be sure to arrive early on summer
weekends as the moorings tend to fill by midday on
Saturday.
There’s quite a list of possible things to do. These include
harbors with restaurants in San Francisco, Sausalito,
Tiburon, Richmond, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland,
Alameda, and San Leandro. In Oakland at Jack London
Square there’s Yoshi’s for Jazz. Pac Bell Park is right at
South Beach Harbor in San Francisco. Sail to a Giants
game! During a multiple day charter it’s possible to sail as
far as Vallejo or even into the California Delta.

When 13-year-old Bill Lefakinis first visited the famed yacht Christina O in 1959 on the Hudson River in New York City, little did he realize that a 45 year old bond was about to start with the legendary vessel.
Lefakinis, chairman of Valef Yachts, had an opportunity to visit the now-famous Aristotle Onassis yacht due to a family invitation extended to Spyros Skouras, by the owner. Skouras, chairman of 20th Century Fox, was invited to the yacht, with Winston Churchill and Maria Callas in attendance. This was heady stuff for a young lad, but it also instilled in Lefakinis a love of yachts in general and yachting in particular.
As a result, the Lefakinis love of yachting has led to his stewardship of a yacht chartering business, Valef Yachts.
He fondly relates how Valef Yachts and the Christina O share a joint tradition and history that is remarkable. The “M/Y Christina O” story actually originated in 1943 in Canada. Back then, the ship was known as the frigate Stormont, a convoy escort. Aristotle Onassis bought it in 1954, turning the frigate into the history’s most famous yacht. The Onassis concept for “Christina O” was to convert the vessel into a powerful symbol of his business empire with unique and total elegance.
Onassis’ guests on board “Christina O” were truly the world’s most famous, powerful and influential people of the time, including Sir Winston Churchill, The Aga Khan, King Farouk, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Eva Peron, Greta Garbo and countless other famous personalities. “Christina O” was also the scene of the world’s most celebrated love affair when Onassis courted Jackie Kennedy. Three years after Onassis’ death, his daughter Christina, the yacht’s namesake, donated the yacht to the Greek Government for the President to entertain visiting Heads of State. Unfortunately, the Christina O was used less often and eventually went through a long period of neglect.
Then in 1998, she was purchased by a family friend of Onassis who spent over 60 million dollars to bring it back to the original Onassis’ condition. Ironically, Bill Lefakinis and has now come full circle with the Christina O.
What’s next for Bill Lefakinis? The tireless and dynamic yacht chartering entrepreneur was very active with the 2004 Olympics in Greece and enjoyed the opportunity to showcase the Greek Islands as one of the world’s truly unique yacht charter destinations.

Formal night on the cruise - The agony and the ecstasy! How better to describe the romantic night when cruise passengers don their best formal cruise wear and strut their stuff?
For some men, it’s the agony of picking out your finest formal cruise wear, carefully packing them in your suitcase, unpacking and un-wrinkling them, and then, worst of all….. having to put the threads on. For other men, it’s the romantic ecstasy of seeing your dazzling beauty dressed in her finest, and walking arm-in-arm through the elegant dining room.
For some women, it’s the agony of deciding what to pack for the formal cruise wear night. Should it be black or brightly colored? Long or short? Or should it be slacks or a gown? For other women it’s the ecstasy of a wonderful romantic night of elegance.
Formal wear is somewhat subjective when it comes to cruises. Most often for men, it will mean wearing a dark suit or jacket and a tie. Tuxedos on some cruises are more common. In fact, many cruise ships will have tuxedos and formal cruise wear available for rent - in advance from the cruise line. You will however want to pre-plan and book your rental as soon as possible before you sail so you won’t be disappointed.
That was easy for the men. There is formal cruise wear available for rent for women as well. The same early planning and booking applies as for men. For many women however, the task of preparing formal cruise wear can be much more exciting or much more daunting. Formal evening gowns are elegant and can be show-stoppers. But pant suits and slacks or skirts and tops can be glamorous as well! In fact a very practical article for any woman to pack is a pair of black silky “cocktail” type slacks. They take up very little room in the luggage and resist wrinkling! Matched them with a couple of tops, and you have formal cruise wear ensembles with very little fuss. And, most have stretchy waistbands so you can enjoy the wonderful culinary masterpieces in comfort! Flat or low heeled shoes make navigating onboard much easier and more comfortable.
These formal nights can make your cruise a wonderful romantic getaway! Exquisite cuisine, elegant dining rooms, intimate lounges, stage shows and reviews all lend themselves to enhance romance on board. Imagine a nightclub filled with tuxedoed men and sequin covered dresses on women. And everyone is basking in the radiant delight of the evening.
Some of the cruise lines request that you remain in your formal cruise wear for the entire evening. Others are more relaxed about the attire. And some, like Norwegian cruise lines operate on a relaxed “Freestyle” cruising atmosphere.
For those of you who absolutely despise getting all gussied up, most cruise ships have dining areas that always allow casual cruise wear. Remember however that most reservation only dining restaurants require formal or informal dress attire as well.
It’s always best, if you have any concerns about what constitutes formal cruise wear on your chosen ship, to check with the cruise line in advance.
So…..now you can relax. The tough formal cruise wear packing has been taken care of! Check out some of the other informative pages.

The next time you go on a cruise to the Caribbean, a great shore excursion to take is one where you “swim” with the stingrays! Our boat took us out into the ocean about 45 minutes off the coast of Grand Cayman Island. Right out in the middle of the ocean is a shallow spot where the stingrays gather. We pulled into a spot among the ring of boats that already circled the stingray’s playground, got into our snorkeling gear, got off the boat and away we went to “swim” with the stingrays.
When my friend Tom first told me he wanted to “swim” with the stingrays I was a little apprehensive because I didn’t know what to expect. I imagined the floor of the ocean carpeted with them and I didn’t know where I was going to step. My apprehension only increased when we were “briefed” on the boat about what our behavior should be like toward the stingrays, and were told not to step on their tails or we would get stung! I got off the boat a nervous wreck!
Once we were in the water my nervousness turned to delight as we watched the graceful creatures glide through the water! There were plenty of stingrays to see, but I didn’t have to worry at all about where I was going to step since they didn’t blanket the entire ocean floor in reality like they did in my imagination. They swam right past us; close enough so that we could reach out and touch them as they glided by.
The stingrays felt like wet mushrooms! It was such fun to gently chase them through the water to see how close to them you could get! Our guide caught a stingray and brought it up out of the water for us to see while he gave us some information about it. Then he let us take a picture with the stingray before he let it go in the water.
If you are looking for a fun experience while you are in the Caribbean, I highly recommend “swimming” with the stingrays!

When searching for the best cruise deals, many of us believe that luck is the key to finding the cruise deals of the century! Well that’s not necessarily true, and we want to show you how to find a cruise deal that will have you traveling on the seas with class!
If you’re interested in taking a cruise, whether it be to the Caribbean, Mayan Riviera, Hawaii, or Europe, one thing to keep in mind is that many cruises are based on seasonality for each select destination, so timing in your vacation is the key.
If you happen to have a flexible vacation schedule, and would like to save considerable amounts of money on your next cruise vacation, then consider traveling on what is called shoulder season, or off-season. This is where demand for cruises is lower than peak times, and in most cases your costs are drastically reduced for vacationing during this time of year!
Top cruise line companies operate in the same capacity as a luxury hotel. It’s all about supply and demand, and when staterooms are not filling up, they take action to fill these cabins, and in most cases in a form of a cabin discount.
Sail An Inaugural Cruise! Be The First To Experience Luxury At A Discount
Depending on what your budget may be for a cruise vacation, many vessels such as Princess, Radisson, Norwegian, Cunard, and so many more ships are expanding their fleet to keep up with the demand of cruisers. however, just like any company introducing their product to the market, a cruise ship is no different. They offer incredible discounted pricing for their inaugural cruises, because they want to introduce their new fleets to the market, and they will rely on your word of mouth to spread the news on how great your vacation was on the select ship you were sailing.
For Cruise Lines, this form of advertising is more valuable and cost effective than mass advertising in the media. The discount is more of a promotional savings that they hope will pay off in the long run, and in most cases it does pay off with great success. This is why they encourage these low discounts during an inaugural cruise launch.
Other cruise companies that take part in these promotions are Celebrity, Holland America, and Royal Caribbean, and you can take advantage of great deals to hot destinations such as the Bahamas, Panama, as well as International cruises to the Mediterranean.
Repositioning Cruises Take You From Point A To Be In Style And Class!
If you have never heard of a repositioning cruise before, then you’re in for a treat! Many people take advantage of the deep savings offered for this type of cruise, and why not, it’s the best way to get from point A to point B in unbelievable Style and Class.
Cruise destinations are broken down into geographic areas during the select seasons, and even though most of these destinations may operate cruises throughout the year, many of the itineraries during the busiest time of year need to fill the needs by sending more ships to that area. So as the Caribbean slows down for vacationers in late spring and summer, the European cruises are starting to increase during their peak season, and ships from the Caribbean are sent to European and Mediterranean ports to meet this seasonal demand.
What this means for you, is that these cruise lines would rather charge an incredibly low price to fill these ships as they travel across the international waters, than to leave them empty. They have to pay staff anyway, so why not have them take care of you in luxury and style while taking in a full cruising experience!
Last Minute Cruise Specials Are Easy To Find Online!
At one point trying to get a last minute cruise vacation deal was like winning a lottery. You would read the Saturday morning paper, and see your local vacation agency advertising incredible last minute deals to exotic ports of call, and as you can picture yourself already there, you have one problem. There are more than likely a thousand others that are dreaming the same dream as you.
You try and call this agency without success, as you’re on hold for what feels like hours! Finally you get through to get the disappointing news that there were only 4 cabins available at that price and they were just sold. Now I don’t know about you, but I believe that booking your relaxing vacation should be a fun experience, not a stressful one.
The best way to overcome this frustrating experience is to plan your last minute cruise vacation, and I know what you’re thinking right now! You are probably wondering how you can plan a last minute cruising holiday, and we say it’s easy when you have a computer and the Internet.
Since the Internet, relying on those ads in your paper were one of a few options, but with access to online Cruise Companies that provide sophisticated technology in selling cruise packages, they become one of the best sources for last minute cruise deals and specials.
With many online travel suppliers offering special search tools, last minute email alerts, and last minute auction capabilities, they open opportunities in achieving your last minute cruise with very little effort, and practically stress free. Imagine an email alert telling you that your last minute vacation is waiting for you to book right now with a few clicks, what a concept!

The Bahamas is arguably the most popular cruise
destination for U.S. travelers, and is especially
popular with first-time cruisers from the U.S. Only
75kms from mainland USA, the outer islands that make
up the group can be reached within a matter of hours.
This makes the Bahamas an excellent choice of
location for a short Bahamas cruise break of two,
three or four nights away from home.
Some 700 islands make up the archipelago of the
Bahamas, of which only around 50 are inhabited.
Cruise lines generally focus on just two Bahaman
ports - Nassau and Freeport.
Nassau is Bahamas’ capital, and is located on the
island of New Providence. It is a beautiful compact
city that is easy to explore inside a day’s shore
excursion. The city’s charm is in its architecture -
and of course its people. Late 18th century and early
19th century colonial buildings stand as reminders of
Bahamas’ British past. Parliament Square in downtown
Nassau offers a unique perspective on the city’s
architecture, watched over, as always, by a grandiose
marble statue of Queen Victoria.
But Nassau is not just about history. It has a vibrant
modern side too. Quality shops, fine restaurants and
golden beaches, up onto which the inviting warm
transparent waters of the Caribbean lap, are all
there to be sampled. Activities such as snorkeling,
diving and passenger submarine rides make for an
exciting time in this tropical paradise. The nightlife
in Nassau is buzzing too, with casinos and nightclubs
offering the best of Bahamian life.
A Bahamas cruise to Freeport on the island of Grand
Bahama offers tropical paradise that is very close to
home. Easily accessible on a two-night Bahamas cruise,
Freeport is a city that welcomes cruisers and tourists
with open arms. Duty-free shopping is one of the
biggest draws of Freeport, and the city itself
features a 10-acre international bazaar - a real
shopping paradise in the tropics!
The nightlife in Freeport is world-renowned. Casinos,
nightclubs and live entertainment in Freeport are
amongst the best in the Caribbean, and make for a
great night out when you’re on a Bahamas cruise.
For travelers looking for a Bahamas cruise of a longer
duration than four nights, some cruise lines offer
special extended cruises, several of which incorporate
a port call at a private island owned by the cruise
company.
Bahamas cruises generally depart from ports in Florida.
Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale and Miami port are the
big three which offer cruises to the Bahamas. So, if
you’re looking to take a short romantic break, or just
fancy a change of scenery for the weekend, why not get
yourself down to Florida and book a Bahamas cruise.
Bahamas cruises are reasonably priced, and I guarantee
you that the experience will be one that lives long in
the memory.
