The British Government’s controversial plan to penalise Internet users downloading illegally has been approved by a committee of MPs after it found the proposals to be “justifiable”. The committee’s recommendations appear at a time when the scheme has come under fire from campaigners and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

The government’s Digital Economy Bill has attracted controversy over its proposals to deal with online piracy. The proposed measures necessitate ISPs to send warning letters to illegal file sharers and downloaders and disconnect them if they repeat their offence.

But consumer rights groups and ISP have opposed the plans as they say policing of online behaviour is uncalled for. They also point out that tracking the IP responsible for Internet piracy does in no way ensure that the actual offender is caught.

However, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Human Rights believes the plan is necessary to curb incidents of Internet piracy. Even as the committee has called for a better explanation of the rules and the premise of the term repeat offender, it has asked the Government to bring in more effective rules to prevent the infringement of copyright. Telecoms watchdog Ofcom has been asked to take care of the technical side of the plans.

The committee, in its review, says it does not believe the coming into effect of these rules will violate an Internet users’ right to privacy, the right to express oneself or the right to respect for their property rights. The committee adds that whatever limited effect on personal freedom may occur due to the imposition of the new rules is quite justifiable.

Last month our business was growing fast, it became obvious that we required more bandwidth.The T1 we had installed just wasn’t big enough for all traffic.

Being the IT guy, I was the one renegotiating our existing contract. Luckily our 2 year term was almost over, so our company was able to look at different alternatives.

The most apparent solution was to go from a single t1 to a bonded T1. Yet it would not take long before that also would not be sufficient.

Our sales rep at our current carrier (who will remain unidentified here) of course was glad to point me to a bigger and far more expensive solution: a DS3 (T3 line) which has a capacity of 45 mb. Obviously that would be bandwidth enough taking our envisioned growth rate into consideration, it was possibly even a bit of an overkill. And monthly cost was in the higher 4 digit figures, something my boss wasn’t too happy with of course.

With due diligence I did some more research until I found something that sounded too good to be true. A new technology (or at least new to me) that can deliver internet access via an Ethernet port over POTS lines, also called Ethernet over Copper. The pricing was super; we were able to get a 10 meg port for less than a 3mb bonded t-1!

And another major benefit of is that it is very scalable. We can just add bandwidth by simply ordering more, in incremental steps of a few megabit, even all the way up to a gigabit Ethernet circuit.

So when upgrading any services, be sure to shop around with several carriers and make sure you are aware of new technologies (or use a telecommunications consultant that is).
