Nevertheless functionality remains limited compared to equivalent desktop applications, the major benefit is to increase the accessibility of said websites. More and more, screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions. Recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with the rather basic Narrator. Screen readers are a form of assistive technology potentially useful to people who are blind, visually impaired, or learning disabled, often in combination with other AT such as screen magnifiers. Screen readers can be assumed to be able to access all display content that is not intrinsically inaccessible.

Web browsers, word processors, icons and windows and email programs are just some of the applications used successfully by screen reader users.

Screen reader choice is contentious: differing priorities and strong preferences are common.

Further, using a screen reader is, according to some users, considerably more difficult than using a GUI and many applications have specific problems resulting from the nature of the application. A screen reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen. Access technology such as screen readers and Screen magnifiers enable the blind to use mainstream computer applications. There are also open source screen readers, such as the Linux Screen Reader for GNOME and NonVisual Desktop Access for Windows.

Experimental approaches in sensory substitution are beginning to provide access to arbitrary live views from a camera.

The primary audience for such applications is those who have difficulty reading because of learning disabilities or language barriers. The Macintosh OS also comes with a built-in screen reader, called VoiceOver. The console-based Oralux Linux distribution ships with three screen-reading environments: Emacspeak, Yasr and Speakup. This interpretation is then represented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a braille output. The movement towards greater web accessibility is opening a far wider number of websites to adaptive technology, making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers. A persons choice of screen reader is dictated by many factors, including platform and the role of organizations like charities, schools, and employers.

Later versions of Microsoft Windows include an Accessibility Wizard and Magnifier for those with partial vision, and Microsoft Narrator, a simple screen reader. The rest have some vision, from light perception alone to relatively good acuity. The latter developed in part by Knopper who has a visual impairment. Near 7 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. Most legally blind people 77 percent do not use computers. The open source GNOME desktop environment long included Gnopernicus and now includes Orca. Linux distributions for the blind include Oralux and Adriane Knoppix.

The Internet has grown from a small network of academics needing a way to trade research into a world-spanning, ubiquitous marketplace and repository for nearly every possible kind of information and knowledge. How does a small business avoid being washed away in the constant tide of buying, selling and marketers hawking every conceivable item (and some difficult to conceive…)?

The Internet provides advantages for both customer and proprietor in that one can search for exactly what is desired, without the bother of endless phone calls, driving to malls, or poring over mail-order catalogs. A quick keyword or 3, and hundreds of results vie for attention on the screen. Making sure your company is one of those results near the top is a combination of factors: specificity in product offerings, Search Engine Optimization of web content and linking to and from related topics and sites.

The only way to get noticed on the Internet is to have a listing or presence, whether a dedicated website, ads on relevant sites, or by word-of-mouth. Oftentimes ads on online journals, informative sites, or e-zines (online magazines) are cheaper than space in a print publication, as well as being available to a wider audience than a dedicated website may be. Rates are often available for daily, weekly, or monthly terms, increasing flexibility and allowing a tight budget more leeway. Word-of-mouth advertising can be very cheap, but the returns may be difficult to quantify. Sponsoring web shows such as podcasts or webcasts can be a great and cheap way to gain word-of-mouth exposure. Many times, a podcaster will be so thrilled to gain sponsorship that rates can be negotiated for very little, but make sure to approach a podcaster that has a show related somehow to your business. Don’t overlook resources like Google’s Adwords either, as they can be slightly pricier than similar options like banner ads, but they are shown to be far more effective than pop-ups, banners, or pay-per-click ads due to their specific targeting.

When a potential customer decides to look up a product that you sell, is he or she going to find your site or listing? Being specific in the terms used on your site or listing is key, as keywords are what drive the search engines like Google and Yahoo. If your company sells shoes, it’s not enough to put the word “shoes” on your site–it has to be anticipatory to the searches that potential customers are doing. Most customers have an idea of what they are looking for when doing a search, so instead of “shoes,” a customer will search for “imported Italian leather shoes.” Specific focusing of terminology and product listings are involved in Search Engine Optimization (SEO), as SEO is driven by specific keywords and their repetition or location on a page. If the term “Italian Leather Shoes” is used 15 times on a website, it will pop up higher on the rating listings than one with the same words, but only as a page heading or title. It would be easy to go overboard on this if it were the only criteria, but it is only one of many different methods search engines use to list websites by relevance. With a clear idea of where you want to go with Internet marketing, it can be a valuable tool to expand your business into the digital realm, but be careful not to go overboard, as all marketing eventually crosses into the zone of limited return. Customers are looking for what they want–it’s up to you to make sure they run into you, and the only way they will is for you to make sure your business is at the places they are going to go.

When is it right for you to rebel against the negative powers working against you? When are so weighed down by someone or something that it is absolutely justified for you to strike back? Have you ever asked that? If so, then read on and let’s look back in history and find a time when men of courage and perseverance did just that. Let the example of those who have gone before inspire and motivate you!

Rarely has the world seen such a formidable body of men gather together for a solemn purpose as when the members of the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia in 1776.

In addition to the weighty duty of representing the citizens of their respective colonies, each of the delegates who would sign the Declaration of Independence brought something significant to Philadelphia: Jefferson brought his eloquence; the world famous, brilliant and elderly Ben Franklin lent celebrity and thus political cover; Sam Adams baptized the movement with fire and intensity; Witherspoon’s religious credibility boosted the cause in the eyes of the devout.

Each signer was courageous and enormously significant; a few of them were truly indispensable.

But even among the giants of the American Revolution, one man stands out: John Hancock.

Hancock’s early life did not obviously reveal that he would become a leader in the independence movement. Hancock was educated at the Boston Latin School and Harvard, graduating from college when he was 17 years old. He then went to work for his uncle, and quickly gained a reputation for being capable and honest. He was even sent on trade trips to England and on one of these he observed - perhaps presciently - the coronation of King George III.

When he was still a young man, he became the heir to the family shipping and import/export fortune and the richest man in Massachusetts. He thus took his place among the Boston elite - most of whom remained unwaveringly loyal to the British crown, no matter what abuses were heaped upon the colonies.

But Hancock would take a different course. He sided with the independence movement. As the crown taxed the colonies and hampered their commerce, Hancock struggled to maintain his business and supply necessities to colonial merchants. As the measures of King George III against the colonists became more oppressive and lawless, Hancock became more evasive and covert.

He simply refused to give in. He organized a boycott of British tea and began smuggling lead, glass and paper into Massachusetts. Other merchants - even if they were not as eager to stick their neck out as Hancock - relied on him to fill their shops. And the customers of those merchants who purchased the necessities of life in those shops also depended on Hancock. Had Hancock taken the easy way out, plenty of people would have suffered.

Hancock named the ship used in his smuggling operation Liberty and she rapidly became a tangible symbol of the cause of colonial independence, if not a celebrity of sorts. When Liberty was impounded by the British in 1768, a riot followed.

During the 1770’s, Hancock was involved in every significant development leading up to the Declaration: the Boston Tea Party, the organization of the minutemen, the financing of the resistance. Indeed, it was often stated that, “Sam Adams wrote the letters to the newspapers, and John Hancock paid the postage.”
He worked tirelessly behind the scenes, but he was not afraid to take a bold public stand, as well. In his famous speech commemorating the Boston Massacre of 1770, Hancock spoke to crowds in Boston, and reminded them never to forget the events of the previous year:

“Let this sad tale of death never be told, without a tear; let not the heaving bosom cease to burn with a manly indignation at the relation of it, through the long tracks of future time; let every parent tell the shameful story to his listening children, till tears of pity glisten in their eyes, or boiling passion shakes their tender frames.”

He then turned his wrath directly on those soldiers who, in a moment of cowardice and panic, fired a volley into a crowd of civilians:

“Dark and designing knaves, murderers, parricides! How dare you tread upon the earth, which has drunk the blood or slaughtered innocence shed by your hands? How dare you breathe that air, which wafted to the ear of heaven the groans of those who fell a sacrifice to your accursed ambition? — But if the labouring earth doth not expand her jaws; if the air you breathe is not commissioned to be the minister of death; yet, hear it, and tremble! The eye of heaven penetrates the darkest chambers of the soul; and you, though screened from human observation, must be arraigned, must lift your hands, red with the blood of those whose death you have procured, at the tremendous bar of God.”

With words like that, it is little wonder that Hancock would soon be charged with treason and become a wanted man.

Fast forward to April of 1775. After a considerable build up of tension between the royalist military governor of Massachusetts and local independence-minded patriots, martial law was declared and a crackdown on the insurgents was ordered. Hancock and Sam Adams were publicly denounced as traitors and their arrest was ordered. Fortunately for Hancock and Adams, they had been warned by Paul Revere and were able to escape and hide before the arrival of troops.

The governor’s troops then marched to Concord where the colonial militiamen were stockpiling weapons and gunpowder. The militiamen and red coats met. The Battle of Lexington and Concord followed, the “shot heard round the world.”

When the smoke cleared, more than fifty of the colonial militia had been killed. The Crown had declared war on the colonies. What would the response be?

In John Hancock’s mind, the necessary response was obvious.

Because of his certainty of purpose, Hancock was elected President of the Continental Congress. One of his first acts (and obviously his most significant one) was to commission George Washington as the chief military officer of the united army of the colonies.

By the time the delegates met in Philadelphia, Hancock’s bold and famous signature on the Declaration was a mere formality. He had already put his life, fortune and sacred honor on the line in the cause of independence. In fact, he likely welcomed the company of the other signers! His large and flamboyant signature went down in history and this quote - likely apocryphal - has often been attributed to him: “The British ministry can read that name without spectacles; let them double their reward.” Whether he actually said that or not, the sentiment is pure Hancock, fearless and defiant. Little wonder his name became synonymous with the word “signature”.

During the Revolutionary War which followed, the burden of financing the war and supplying the troops with necessities fell largely on Hancock. He did not fail to deliver. As if that were not enough, in 1780, with a few years remaining in the war, Hancock was elected as the first governor of Massachusetts - a post he held until his death in 1793.

With victory and the Treaty of Paris, you might think that things would slow down for Hancock, but that was hardly the case. He was called upon time and again. He represented Massachusetts under the Articles of Confederation and was the seventh President of the United States in Congress. With the demise of the Articles, as governor of Massachusetts, he became a major voice for ratification of the U.S. Constitution. In the new United States, he pushed for the creation of a powerful navy - a move which proved to be critical to the new nation’s survival in the War of 1812.

For most of his life, John Hancock expended an enormous amount of energy for the cause of liberty and for American independence. While no one can challenge Washington for the title of “Father of our Country”, Hancock would be a strong contender for the title of “Grandfather of our Country”.

What does the life of John Hancock mean for us today? So long as there are people who want to take away the freedoms of other people, we should not forget John Hancock.

His response - his disobedience to the governmental forces which oppressed him and other colonists - is not universally applicable. As the Declaration argues, governments should not be overthrown or disobeyed for trivial reasons. But sometimes governments should, indeed, must be disobeyed.

Take, for example, the story of a handful of Texas families in the late ’70’s and early ’80’s. For various and diverse reasons, they had exercised their liberty to teach their children at home rather than in the public schools or in a private academy.

They were on solid legal ground to do so. As anyone with even a cursory knowledge of Texas history knew, the Texas compulsory attendance law enacted in 1916 did not preclude education at home. More than a few Texans were doing just that when the law was passed. After all, there were not that many private or public schools in the state at that time, certainly not enough to accommodate all Texas children. It was simply understood that many Texas children were taught at home before, during and after the passage of the compulsory attendance law. It never occurred to anyone that compulsory attendance outlawed learning at home.

That is, until 1981 when a bright staff attorney for the Texas Education Agency suddenly announced that homeschooling was not one of the exceptions to compulsory attendance. Shortly after that, an assistant general counsel - not to be outdone in zeal to curtail freedom — announced even more bluntly: “The compulsory student attendance laws of the State of Texas do not permit students to be taught at home.”

Never mind history and the traditional freedoms which Texans had always enjoyed. “There is a new sheriff in town,” was the flavor of the Texas Education Agency’s argument.

Sound familiar? “The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.”

After the announcement of this novel interpretation of a six decade-old statute, the State of Texas actually began prosecuting disobedient, noncompliant parents - those stubborn parents who refused to bow their knee to the dictates of the State. In all, some 150 prosecutions were initiated, and about 80 of them were actually tried. And some were convicted. By 1984, teaching your own children at home in Texas had become a criminal offense!

Enter the plaintiffs in Leeper v. Texas Education Association. Some of them had already been criminally prosecuted for their refusal to obey the State; some of them had been threatened with prosecution. Some of them had been financially harmed by Texas’ criminalization of homeschooling. But they all had this in common: like John Hancock, they did not regard recent pronouncements from a crazed King, er, State agency demonstrating willful ignorance of history as being the final word on the matter. They were not willing to let their freedom, the freedom of others and the freedom of the next generation to be squandered simply because they couldn’t stomach a bit of a fight. Rather, they geared up for the battle. Though they had few resources, in their hearts they knew they were right and the “red coats” were wrong.

The case took about a decade to end. But the final shot was fired by the Texas Supreme Court in 1995 when it unanimously announced that from that point on (just as before) the Texas compulsory attendance law could no longer be used to make criminals out of parents who teach their children at home. The conflict was obviously not bloody, unlike the American Revolution. But the stakes were high.

If they had acquiesced, that freedom would have been lost. What is the next freedom we would lose?

If we value freedom, then from time to time, we need John Hancocks. We need people to continue to import goods or educate their children or refuse to move to the back of the bus- even if the State tells them otherwise.

Only through occasional active disobedience and confrontation will our historic freedoms be protected. Let’s hope that whenever the next big deprivation of freedom occurs, there are some John Hancocks among us who will be willing to disobey and fight.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government.

Rebellion is also personal and when a tyrannical force is oppressing your life - when you are weighted down by anxiety, fear, bordeom, lack of confidence, meaning and vision, it is time to strike back, and strike back violently. Make a list of your shortcomings - your enemies - and systematically eliminate them from your life.

Eschatology - Is the Present World Headed For Destruction?

Do You Live In Fear of the Imminent End of the World?

Relax. You’ll be just fine. Here’s a message of hope. For too long the world has lived and labored under the destructive mindset that everything is going to hell in a hen basket. As usually is the case the loudest voices lack substantive proof.

Consider a different end-time perspective, not because it may be new to you, but simply because it has validity based upon evidence.

The Critical Problem of Time

Where did the idea of the imminent destruction of the universe originate in the first place? On May 22, 2000, in USA Today, Irvin Baxter prophesies a war for the near future in which two billion people will die. Men obsess with predicting the end of the world.

People have been predicting the end of the world since the close of the first century? The irony is, when the “end of the world” was imminent, men obsessed with its continuation (2 Peter 3:4). Now that the predicted end occurred many modern day prophets yet proclaim the imminent end of the world and all life on the planet.

The Promise to Never Destroy the Earth

After bringing a flood upon the earth to destroy all living things because of man’s evil, Genesis 6:5, God promises that He would never again curse the ground or destroy every living thing as he had done. His promise is, ‘While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease. (Genesis 8:21, 22).

Someone may respond that this begs the question of how long does the earth remain? The answer is forever. Solomon said, one generation passes away, and another generation comes; but the earth abides forever. (Ecclesiastes 1:4). David recorded that God made a decree stating the sun, moon, stars and the heavens were established forever and would not pass away. (Psalms 148:4-6)

The Predicted End of the World

What is commonly known as the prediction of the end of the world is often misunderstood and more often misapplied. Jesus is asked by disciples after hearing about the destruction of the temple, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age.” (Matthew 24:3)

Some translations will supply “world” instead of age. This is not an accurate rendering. The word “age” from aeon is correct. It means an epoch or period of time. Their question is not about a future destruction of the globe. They wanted to know when the “age” i.e. Old Covenant age would come to an end. It was that end that was predicted, not an end of the material creation.

The language of “de-creation” is often used in the prophets to describe the fall of nations. See for example, Isaiah 13:10-13, where the language describes in apocalyptic terms, the end of ancient Babylon. Check other references in Isaiah 34:3-5, referring to Edom.

Apocalyptic Language

Too often, apocalyptic or figurative language is interpreted literally causing great confusion and misunderstandings. It forces unnatural renderings of plain texts. When we consider the time element that is used in the texts, we cannot place interpretations on the passages which violate the time in which the event is scheduled to occur. That is a huge key in understanding Bible prophecy. It virtually eliminates the end-time madness being inflicted upon society today.

Yes, the heavens and earth are said to be destroyed, but such language is governed by and within time limiting statements which set the parameters of fulfillment to be the age in which Jesus lived. “Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place.

The Language of the Apostles

The above is why the apostles saw themselves living in the terminal generation. They never expected life on the planet to end. They were well-versed in Old Testament imagery and they knew such terminology referred to the end of the Old Covenant era.
Paul, for example, declares that the end of the age had come in their day. “Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.” (1 Corinthians 10:11). It serves no value to claim Paul was mistaken, that Jesus lied or that all the first century writers were misinformed.

They knew well the meaning of their words. They did live in the end of the age/world. The confusion begins when we misunderstand their language and misapply it by placing 21st century applications on first century events. Until we are more wise in handling the end-time language of the Bible, we are forever doomed to a hopeless future of confusion, self-fulfilling prophecies of destruction and war, and to a society paralyzed with fear and its consequences.

Jesus Died in the End of the Age

The phrase “end of the age” occurs five times in the New Testament. (Matthew 13:39, 40; 24:3; 28:20, and Hebrews 9:26) Each time it occurs, the Mosaic or Jewish age is meant. In the Hebrews passage, the text says Jesus died in the “end of the age.” Did the material world end with Jesus’ death? Was it about to end? We can all look back almost 2000 years ago and see that that was not the case.

However, there was an age which hurried toward destruction. The day, near on the horizon soon approached. (Hebrews 10:25) The event being concurrent with Christ’s return would happen in a little while. (Hebrews 10:37) These are the time statements that limit the end-time events to the first century.
That is why the writers of the Bible said, “The world is passing away.” (1 Corinthians 7:31; 1 John 2:15-17)

In addition, the antichrists were right there signaling that the last hour had come in their day, (1 John 2:18).
When speaking of the present world under the new covenant, it is a world which lasts forever and has no end. (Luke 1:32, 32; Ephesians 3:21; Hebrews 12:28)

In summary, the problems with end of the world predictions lie in their failure to encompass the emphatic time statements that saturate end-time teachings. These statements placed the end-time events in the first century. That includes what is called the end of the world.

With no outlook for doom on the horizon, we can expect nothing but a very bright future. The world will continue on. Life on the plant continues endlessly. Contrary to the escapism mandated by doom and gloom prophets, let’s get busy making it a better place instead of sabotaging ourselves and others with “chicken little” philosophy.

From the Eye of the Potato: How complicated does a business have to be anyway? Well, here’s how I got started when I was just a snot-nosed kid.

Paul Henderson is an old friend of mine.

I used to win a lot of marbles at school during the day.

After school, I’d go over to Paul’s house where he, by his good shooting, arbitrary game rules, and if necessary “cheating,” would win all of my marbles.

This would make me very angry.

He would then give me 5 marbles back so that I could fill my pockets at school the next day and then let him “win” them from me again.

Sometimes his brother, Dick, would give me a can of marbles if he felt that I’d been ripped off too much.

I saw both of these gents at our 50th wedding anniversary party a couple of years ago. It was great to see them again.

Paul was born with “business” stamped in his brain. He was sharp, shrewd, and energetic. He used to tell me about every three minutes, “It’s the middleman that makes the dough, Moe. You want to be the middleman.”

The kids in the neighborhood called me Moe then and sometimes still do. It was because of the haircuts Dad gave me. Like a bowl over the head.

After my college teaching and engineering career, I wrote a bunch of novels and started business on the Internet. I’m a middleman right now. I’m the executive representative for a company who handles most of my online orders. I just take the orders and submit them to the warehouse back east.

You probably heard Mel Brooks say in one of his movies, “It’s good to be the king!” Well, it is good to be the middleman too.

Now if you are not fast asleep from that not so fiery introduction, let me tell you how Paul taught me about business.

One day, we decided that we wanted to build a big fire and brew up a big pot of stew. All we needed was the ingredients. So Paul said, “No problem! Grab the wagon and we’ll get the money to buy not only the stew ingredients, but hot dogs, soda pop, and marshmallows too.”

We walked the few blocks past the state fair grounds and headed west along the highway. Then we picked up the beer and soda pop bottles along the road that carried a deposit.

When we had walked so far that the “next stop” was “Reno,” our legs falling off, we had a wagon full of bottles. We headed back to the corner grocer and collected the deposit.

But we needed more money.

This is when I learned about business. Instead of heading back along the highway, we headed for one of two junk yards located next to each other. Paul asked each owner how much they wanted for bottles. The winner of this bidding war was an old lady that looked either like a witch or “Dirty Nell.” Well, I guess she looked like both. Some of the kids in the neighborhood said she was a witch and cast spells on the unsuspecting.

We filled the wagon with bottles to overloading and paid the lady.

I can still see her smiling and dropping the coins into a long black coin purse with a nickel-plated snap lock at the top. The kids in the neighborhood knew that she hid that purse in her rundown shack, but they would never dare enter therein.

Off we went to the grocery store, trying to keep the bottles in the wagon as we bumped over the railroad tracks and the not so smooth sidewalk. TAt the store, we sold the newly purchased bottles for a penny or two more than we paid for them.

We repeated this process until our legs were stubs. Thankfully, Ken Horsely, who owned the store, said, “No More Bottles!”

He was running out of space to put them.

Paul looked disappointed, but I was glad to hear those words. It meant no more trudging back and forth across the railroad tracks to the junk yard.

I might note here, that before day’s end, we were buying at both junk yards. We were big time operators.

Our business done for the day, we immediately blew almost all of our money on the stew makin’s, the hot dogs, the soda pop, and the marshmallows.

Except for this: Paul held back some money for future operations.

We would not ever again have to go along the highway to get bottles for our seed money. We would (and did often) head for the junk yards instead.

Well, to say the least, we were very hungry and tired. After making the fire and preparing the stew, we thought the stew would never get done. Fortunately, we had the hot dogs to tied us over. Although Paul and I had done all of the work, we shared with all the kids in the neighborhood.

It was one big party!
